When Universal Creative set out to build the iconic Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon perched atop Gringotts Bank in Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Daigon Alley), they needed a precise bridge between complex mechanical engineering and world-class artistic design.

Gentle Giant Studios was brought onboard to collaborate on creating the high-fidelity 3D model and physical scale maquette that served as the foundation for this landmark theme park attraction.

The Challenge: Merging Structural Engineering with Film-Accurate Artistry

Creating a monumental, outdoor physical sculpture that shoots real flame high above park guests required an intricate balancing act between aesthetics and structural safety:

• Engineered CAD Integration: Working alongside Universal’s engineering team, Gentle Giant Studios started with a complex structural CAD model. This contained all the internal steel armatures, piping, and mechanical flame delivery systems necessary to safely anchor the massive creature atop Gringotts Bank.

• Film-Accurate Digital Sculpting: Guided directly by Art Department leads from the Harry Potter film franchise, our digital artists sculpted the dragon’s skin, texture, scale patterns, and anatomical details directly around the fixed internal structural armature.

• Physical Prototyping & Scale Maquette: To validate aesthetic accuracy, proportion, and structural harmony, Gentle Giant Studios fabricated a detailed 8-foot-tall physical maquette of the dragon seated atop the bank building.

Using our final approved 3D digital asset and physical scale model, Universal’s team constructed the full-scale, fire-breathing centerpiece that millions of theme park visitors admire today.
